Brig Leigh Tingey

Brigadier Leigh Tingey, Chief of Staff Standing Joint Command (UK), Ministry of Defence

Brigadier Leigh Tingey was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1989.  He spent his formative years as a Troop Commander and Operations Officer within close support and commando units and completed a Civil Engineering Bachelor’s degree at the Defence Academy. A busy tour as the Adjutant of 22 Engineer Regiment was followed by two highly enjoyable years as a Platoon Commander at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.  In 2000 he returned to the Defence Academy to complete a Defence Technology Master’s degree and Advanced Command and Staff Course 6. Appointments followed in the Directorate of Equipment Capability, in command of 30 Armoured Engineer Squadron and as an instructor at the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) in Canada.  He returned to the Ministry of Defence in 2009, spent a year as an SO1 in the Policy Branch of the General Staff and took command of 24 Commando Engineer Regiment in 2010. During an exceptionally rewarding command tour he deployed with the regiment on Exercise AURIGA, a two month amphibious exercise with the USMC; led the Task Force Helmand Engineer Group throughout Operation HERRICK 14; and oversaw the regiment’s return to contingency, notably deploying it to the Mediterranean in support of the Responsive Force Task Group on Exercise COUGAR 12.  Eight months as a Syndicate DS on the Advanced Command and Staff Course preceded a move into the Army Division of the Defence Academy as a Divisional Director in 2013.  After three professionally stimulating years delivering training and education to newly promoted Majors he took over as the Assistant Head International Engagement, part of the Army Staff in London, in August 2016.  From September 2017 to July 2018 he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies and on promotion to Brigadier took over as the Deputy Commanding General of the 1st US Armored Division in August 2018.  During his first year in Fort Bliss, Texas he completed a Divisional Warfighter, attended the Capstone Course and trained Armored Brigade Combat Teams for their National Training Center rotations. From July 2019 to April 2020, he commanded US Task Force Southeast in Afghanistan. He returned to the UK and took over as the Chief of Staff, Standing Joint Command (UK) in September 2020.

Brigadier Tingey has completed numerous overseas exercises and operational deployments; the latter taking him to the Gulf (1991), Northern Ireland (1997), Bosnia (1999), Iraq (2005) and Afghanistan (2007, 2011 and 2019/20).  For his last tour in Central Helmand he was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service and for his recent tour commanding Task Force Southeast he was awarded the US Legion of Merit.

Brigadier Tingey is married to Kerry and they have three children: Ben, Olivia and Will.  He continues to be an enthusiastic follower of most sports; heads out on his road bike, skis and surfs whenever possible; and enjoys walking with Henry, his endearingly mad Labrador.
